From raised eyebrows to standing ovations

12.08.2015

The complicated relationship between Brahms and Clara Schumann reads like a cheesy romantic movie plot. Yet their situation is just an illumination of what was very common in the classical music world in the 1800s-1900s. The passionate yet impossible, idealized and unfulfilled love seemed to be everywhere! Even Beethoven wrote a heartbreaking letter to his "Immortal Beloved" only to never post it!

As good at such actions (or lack of them!) proved good for romantic music, they surely weren’t so good for women in question. Yet they weren’t able to do anything about it! It was a men’s world, and the women were sentenced to passiveness.

Thank god Satu Vänska and Jasminka Stančul didn’t live then! Expressive and passionate, their playing surely would have raised eyebrows. Today, it’s their audiences who rise from their seats to reward them with standing ovations. I bet Maribor will be no difference! Just check the program for September 14th and15th, and I’m sure you’ll agree with me!

P.S: Both love stories mentioned above of course were turned into movies. In Song of Love (1947), Audrey Hepburn will try to convince you she can play the piano. In Immortal Beloved (1948) they will try to convince you that Beethoven’s (Gary Oldman) secret love were neither Antonie Brentano, nor Josephine Brunsvik, but a local upholsterer’s daughter!
