Nothing to hide!

Text by: Maja Pirš

When I was a little girl I wanted to be a boy. Not because I would have been missing a penis (I only got interested in those quite a few years later), and not because my parents would have been forcing me to either behave as a girly girl (I was a little rascal, climbing trees and throwing mud-balls into my imaginary enemies) nor dress like a princess (no pink shades anywhere, ever). It was because I have thought being a boy must be much more interesting. Four decades later I know it is not. On the contrary! Men are being (and are expected to be) … well … men. While us, women have so many interesting and exciting roles to choose from! Mother? Daughter? Wife? Lover? Saint? Seductress? Muse? Creator? The list goes on and on.

I have tried quite a few of them already. Some fit well, some not. Some were fun, some not so much. The best part? There is no end in sight! Today I am a mother. Tomorrow I may be a monster. I choose. I live it. I love it. (And If I don’t, I change.)

So, dear men, do not even try to define us. As Aljaž Zupančič and Slavoj Žižek* cleverly observed: “The enigma of woman hides the fact that there is nothing to hide, that there is no hidden essence there beyond…”
I couldn’t agree more! We are what we are. We are all the above and so much more. Women. No secrets, nothing to hide. What you see is what you get.

You should know, though, that what you get today might be a totally different thing from what you would get tomorrow!

PS: To put you at ease, we know exactly what you will get on September 13th. The WOman project, multimedia event, which according to the festival’s tradition, will again be exciting and experimental with the aim to reveal the visionary and provocative art and creativity of women. Designed by Satu Vänska, the WOman Project brings collaboration with the theatre director Matjaž Latin and dramaturge Aljaž Zupančič, featuring music from Mahler’s 5th Symphony Adagietto to Lalo Schifrin’s Mission Impossible. Check the full program below – we have so much to show! (And nothing to hide!)
